| To get the flow of the river we need three measurements. First, the depth of the river using these large rule: each segment corresponds to 10 cm. | |

| Second,
we have to measure the river width. That's what María and Isa
are doing on the bridge. |

| Third,
we get water speed throwing some leaves and measuring the time they
need to cover 10 metres. |

| Eventually,
we work out the river flow using a simple formula. |

| This is a
spring called Nacimento del Benafí. This is the beginning of a
stream which passes behind the Casas del Molino and ends in the river
of Ubrique. So it is a tributary river that joins to the main river
near to Fernando Gavilan School. Part of the water from
the spring is kept in a reservoir (on the right).

The river of Ubrique usually carries an small amount of water but the Fuente de los Nueve Caños gives a lot of water to the river. The picture on the left shows the place where the water from this fountain gets into the river. The Fuente de los Nueve Caños is a spring, a place where underground water comes out. We measure the fountain flow with a plastic bottle (picture below). |
